Cottee predicts dream run in Europe for Leicester

Foxes’ counter-attacking style will suit knockout stages says former striker

Dubai: Former Leicester City striker Tony Cottee has backed his old club to have a dream run in Europe this season.

The Foxes are currently top of their group with two wins from the first two matches against Brugge and Porto.

“They will do very well in the Champions League especially in the knockouts because clubs will attack them and they will get them on the counter, not too many teams will want to play them,” said Cottee, who scored 27 goals in 85 appearances with Leicester between 1997-2000, winning the League Cup in 2000 under Martin O’Neill.

In contrast the shock Premier League champions of 2015/16 haven’t started so well domestically this season and are currently 12th after three defeats in seven games.

“If I was coming back off holiday having just won the league I would be so excited about playing Champions League football for the first time that I would lose a bit of focus on the league and I think that is what has happened.

“Leicester winning the league was the best thing to happen since Nottingham Forest won it with Brian Clough in 1978, but did anyone expect them to win it again this season? No.

“I always thought they’d finish mid-table and eighth or ninth would be a good season. But in the Champions League the fans should enjoy the journey because it’s going to be fantastic.”
