Dubai: Over 600 cyclists took part in the third of the four build-up rides ahead of December 12’s Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge at Al Qudra on Friday.

More than 2,000 riders are expected to enter the fifth edition of the 92km annual ride this year — a field that would be four times bigger than when the event was launched in 2010.

Four build-up rides are held in the months leading up to the event and, despite the distances increasing each time, the number of participants is also going up steadily.

The first ride over 35km in September attracted 420 cyclists, 510 turned out for the second event over 45km in early October and over 600 took part in the 65km ride on Friday. The fourth and final build-up ride will be over 85km on November 28.

The Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge is aiming to provide a bigger and better competitive experience this year with an expanded programme catering to all age groups.

Two Junior Challenges will be held on December 11. Cyclists aged 7-10 will be able to enter a 16km race, while those aged 11-16 will race over 32km. Mini Rides for the smaller children aged six and under will be held on December 12, the day of the Spinneys 92. Registration for the Junior Challenge will cost Dh50, with participants receiving a medal and t-shirt.
