Cardiff: India thrashed England by 133 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method to win the second One-Day International at Cardiff on Wednesday.

World champions India, after losing the toss, made 304 for six in their 50 overs with Suresh Raina scoring exactly 100.

India had been in trouble at 19 for two after losing the toss before a stand of 91 between Rohit Sharma (52) and Ajinkya Rahane (41) repaired the early damage. Raina and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (52) then picked up the pace in a fifth-wicket partnership of 144 in just 111 balls.

Chris Woakes (four for 52) and off-spinner James Tredwell (two for 42) were the only England bowlers to take wickets.

England bowled 16 wides, with all-rounder Chris Jordan delivering 12 — the equivalent of two extra overs — during an expensive return of none for 73.

“It’s a very different format,” said Dhoni, welcoming the world champions’ return to playing ODIs, “and it gives them freedom to express themselves in the field.”

Rain during the mid-innings break left England chasing a revised target of 295 in 47 overs, but they collapsed to 161 all out in 38.1 overs, with opener Alex Hales top-scoring with 40 on his ODI debut.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took four for 28 in seven overs.

England quickly fell behind the run-rate and lost three wickets in 20 balls, with Cook trapped lbw for 19 after playing across the line and both Ian Bell (1) and Joe Root (4) misjudging straight deliveries to be bowled by Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, respectively.

When Hales top-edged a sweep off Jadeja and was caught by Ravichandran Ashwin, England was tottering on 81-4 and only Eoin Morgan (28) put up any worthwhile resistance in the middle and lower order.

“We didn’t play very well at all,” Cook said. “Credit to MS [Dhoni] and Raina, they took the game away from us.”

Promising start

Earlier, England captain Alastair Cook opted to field first after winning the toss and then saw Anderson and Woakes, opening the bowling in place of the injured Stuart Broad, start with a maiden apiece.

Shikhar Dhawan made a nervy 11 before he was caught behind off Woakes.

Three balls later, 19 for one became 19 for two as Virat Kohli’s miserable tour of England continued with a duck. Kohli struck a powerful drive off Woakes, but the ball flew straight to Cook at mid-off.

At that stage, there was a case for keeping Anderson and Woakes going. But instead Cook made a double bowling change, Jordan replacing Woakes (5-1-8-2) and Ben Stokes coming on for Anderson (6-1-27-0).

India then cut loose, Sharma lofting Stokes for six off a free hit and Rahane driving Jordan for four. But as so often in his England career, one-day specialist Tredwell proved a partnership breaker. He had Rahane stumped by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler and then lured Sharma into a miscued lofted drive that found Woakes at long-off.

Raina, however, launched Woakes for two sixes in four balls — the first straight back over the bowler’s head and the second high over long leg.

India scored 62 runs in five overs from the 36th to the 40th of their innings, with Raina contributing 41 off 15 balls.
