Dubai: Rohan Mustafa’s fighting unbeaten 44 and left-arm spinner Ahmad Raza’s three-wicket haul helped Emirates Cricket Board XI hold West Indies to a draw in the two-day match at the ICC Academy ground.

ECB, starting the second day at 56 for 7, fought hard through Shaiman Anwar and Mustafa to put on 60 for the eighth wicket.

Shaiman fell at his score on 39 off 78 balls, hitting five boundaries and one six. Skipper Amjad Javed saw ECB go past the 100-run mark, but edged Devendra Bishoo to Jermaine Blackwood in the slips for 13. Mustafa fought valiantly to score an unbeaten 44 off 103 balls with eight boundaries. Jonathan Carter returned with figures of four for 30.

In the second innings, West Indies declared at 173 for 7 after ECB bowlers, led by left-arm spinner Ahmad Raza, produced a fine show. Speaking to Gulf News after his haul of three for 69 from 21 overs, Raza said: “It was a good feeling to get Test batsmen out. I bowled 21 overs on the trot in the first innings, but without luck as a few chances were dropped.

“In the second innings I am happy that my another spell of 21 overs was rewarded with three wickets on a hot day. This spell gives me a lot of confidence for the oncoming series against Oman from October 13.”

Javed picked an early wicket in West Indies’ second innings by dismissing Shai Hope for a duck. Going for a pull, Hope was caught at mid-on by Qadeer Ahmad. At the score on 14, opener Leon Johnson too fell, flicking Qadeer straight to Mohammad Usman at short square leg for 10. Blackwood hit two boundaries and a six to score 17 runs when Qadeer struck again to have him caught behind.

Raza, bowling a good line and length, had Carter, who went for a wild swing, clean bowled for 29. Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich took the West Indies total past the 100-run mark before Raza, with his well flighted delivery, had Chase caught and bowled for 36. Raza also trapped Jomel Warrican leg before for 2. After Imran Haider took the wicket of Bishoo by having him caught by Javed at short extra cover for 15, West Indies declared their second innings at 173 for 7.

In the second innings, UAE batsmen refused to collapse like in the first innings, with Mohammad Qasim and Rohan Mustafa putting on 36 runs. Though Mustafa fell for 21, Qasim remained unbeaten on 21 to end the match at 43 for 1.
