Dubai: Chris Gayle broke the record for most number of sixes in a T20 innings as he hit 18 of them in an unbeaten 146 off just 69 balls for Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League final against Dhaka Dynamites in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Gayle also crossed the 11,000-run mark in T20, and is way ahead of Brendon McCullum, who is second in the list with 8526 runs.
The southpaw was dropped by Shakib Al Hasan on 22 and then went onto share an unbeaten 201-run stand with McCullum — a highest partnership in T20 final — to power Rangpur Riders to 206 for one. Gayle also became the first batsman to hit 20 hundreds in T20s.
The number of sixes hit by Gayle is also a world record in an innings in the format. His sixes count in T20 cricket reached whopping figure of 819. In the process, Gayle became the first batsman to hit 100 sixes in BPL.
Earlier, the Jamaican ace smashed 126 not out off just 51 deliveries to help Rangpur Riders cruise to victory over the Khulna Titans.
Gayle, featuring for Rangpur Riders, in the eliminator against Khulna Titans in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) stroked his first ton of the season in the T20 tournament.
This also helped Gayle become the first batsman to smash 800 sixes in T20s, way ahead of the second-placed Kieron Pollard who is on 506 sixes.
