Dubai: Eoin Morgan, skipper of England in the shorter format, is indebted to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and feels it’s the reason behind his success.

“I’d love to go back (to IPL). I’ve learnt a great deal from playing in that environment, under pressure, and have always come back a better player from being there rather than not going. I think [playing in the IPL] will be very valuable,” said Morgan, who is riding high after winning the One-day series against Pakistan here.

Morgan believes that playing here against Pakistan in a T20 series will be a huge build up-for his team. “We are lucky our squad doesn’t change a great deal from One-day to Twenty20 and that’s been aided by the fact we’ve changed the brand we play in ODIs, so it also is very relevant in Twenty20. Our strategy is quite simple — to continue testing ourselves, our ability, regardless of any situation we play.”

Morgan is delighted with the state of England in world cricket. “I think our progress since the start of the summer has been outstanding. We continue to push our boundaries, and the opposition, at every stage of the game. We’ve never taken a negative step, a backward step, since we’ve come together as a squad. As long as that continues, and we’re really honest with ourselves and learn along the way, it will hold us in good stead for the Twenty20 World Cup,” he said.

Morgan is happy that England players are now playing a lot of Twenty20 cricket, “In the upcoming series in South Africa, guys who potentially won’t play immediately will be exposed to big-bash cricket. I think that’s brilliant as the more guys we see gain experience in high-pressure environments in really good overseas competitions, the better our side will become.”

Morgan is delighted that his team has players such as Jos Buttler who can sparkle in Twenty20. Buttler had hit a 46-ball century in the recent One-day series. “We also have Alex Hales at the top of the order — with his experience — to help Jason Roy gauge exactly what is a good for a five or six-over total in the power play. Breeding confidence off each other and bouncing off each other is quite key — and will help our top three grow.”
