Glasgow: Jamaica’s world silver medallist Warren Weir got his Commonwealth Games campaign off to a confident start on Wednesday, while Canada took the first of the diving golds.

In the absence of double world and Olympic champion Usain Bolt, Weir, who also won bronze behind Bolt and Yohan Blake at the 2012 London Olympics, is one of the hot favourites to claim the 200 metres to make it a sprint double for Jamaica after Kemar Bailey-Cole won 100-metre gold on Monday.

He lived up to that tag by cruising through his 200-metre heat in a comfortable time of 20.71 seconds.

Neither Bailey-Cole nor 100-metre bronze medallist Nickel Ashmeade are competing in the 200, but Weir will have compatriots Jason Livermore and national champion Rasheed Dwyer for company.

Also qualifying for Thursday’s semi-finals were Daniel Bailey of Antigua and South African Wayde van Niekerk.

In the men’s 400-metre hurdles, Wales’ defending champion Dai Greene, the 2011 world gold medallist who has struggled with injury since, failed to come through his heat, a lack of track time showing as he faded badly down the back stretch.

“I knew I was playing catch-up from a few months ago, I didn’t expect to be here but my mindset did shift a bit and I wanted to make the final but ran out of steam, sadly it wasn’t to be,” Greene told BBC.

In the diving, taking place in Edinburgh, the favoured Canadian pair Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion took gold in the women’s synchronised 10 metre platform.

In the women’s hockey there was joy for England as they edged Scotland 2-1 to reach the semi-finals and a match-up with New Zealand, who were too good for Canada.

Meanwhile, Indian wrestlers continued their impressive run, with four reaching gold medal play-offs and one the bronze medal match at the SECC Hall.

After two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, Amit Kumar and Vinesh Phogat bagged golds and Rajeev Tomar settled for silver on Tuesday, their compatriots Satywart Kadian, Bajrang, Lalita, Sakshi Malek and Navjot Kaur also made it to the medal rounds of their respective categories on Wednesday.

While Kadian, Bajrang, Lalita and Malek are eyeing the top spot in the gold medal contest, Kaur will be fighting for bronze.

Haryana’s Kadian started the proceedings in the men’s freestyle 97kg by comprehensively winning in the round of 16 and quarter-final and going on to defeat England’s Leon Rattigan 8-4 in the semi-final. The 20-year-old will take on Canada’s Indian origin wrestler Arjun Gill in the final.

Bajrang also had easy outings in his first two bouts and then defeated Nigeria’s Amas Daniel 5-2 in the last four clash of the men’s freestyle 61kg category. He will take on Canada’s David Tremblay in the final.

Among the women, Malek and Lalita started directly in the quarter-finals, with both coming out on top.

In the freesytle 53kg semi-final, Lalita thrashed local girl Shannon Hawke 4-0, while Malek defeated Braxton Stone 8-5 in the freestyle 58kg last four clash.

The summit clash will be a battle between India and Nigeria in both cases, with Lalita taking on Odunayo Adekuoroye and Malek facing Akirat Adeniyi.

With only four contestants in the women’s freestyle 69kg event, Navjot started directly in the semis but lost 0-10 to Dori Yeats of Canada.

In the bronze medal play-off, she will be up against Scotland’s Sarah Jones.
