Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi is fully geared up to host the World Police Games from Saturday.
Around 1,000 sportsmen from 44 countries are expected to take part in the event.
The UAE Police Sports Federation, who are organising the second International Police Sports Union (USIP) World Police Games, announced on Wednesday that the event will be officially inaugurated at 6pm on Saturday at the Police College of Abu Dhabi.
The USIP was founded in May 1990 in Paris by 43 countries including the UAE. It currently boasts 50 member countries of which 20 are Arab nations.
Brigadier Mohammad Humaid Dalmouj Al Daheri, the chairman of the Supreme Organising Committee of the Games, said the UAE was well-prepared for the event. “We are completely ready to host the event in the capital. The participation of a number of countries and sportsmen show how important this event is,” he said.
The Games, to be held from November 4 until 10, will see competitions in shooting, swimming, judo and jiu-jitsu.
One of the tasks of USIP is to promote and encourage sports within police forces. They also are primary organisers of the Official World Police Championships.
Individual delegations can participate with a maximum of 26 athletes, four coaches, one administrator/assistant and one delegation leader.
The UAE Police Sports Federation have made special arrangements with UAE national airlines to reduce the air fares for the visiting teams and will accommodate delegations at leading hotels.
The USIP is the official World Police Sport Union and recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
“The events are an arena for the exchange of professional experience between police officers from all over the world,” Brig. Al Daheri said. “Another goal of the USIP is creating opportunities to further develop the friendly and professional relations between the various police organisations from all continents.”
