Dubai:

Budding sportsmen and women representing the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) bagged five medals at the annual BITS Pilani Inter-University Sports Festival last week.

The UOWD women’s volleyball team won the title following a nail-biting final against Heriot Watt University, while Nikil Peter took gold in the 100m sprint. The women’s basketball team and throwball teams took the runners up medals in their respective competitions and sprinter Jeet Singh won bronze for his efforts in the boys 200m race.

The interuniversity sports competition, now in its 12th year, attracted participation of more than 1000 students representing 21 universities and colleges from across the UAE in a number of sporting fields, including football, cricket, badminton, volleyball, tablet tennis, athletics and chess.

UOWD’s strong performance in this year’s competition builds on their success in 2013, when the University won four medals in basketball, throwball, volleyball and the 400m.

Franky Barreto, Manager, UOWD Student Services, said: “UOWD’s sports teams show time and time again that they’re a force to be reckoned with and the emphatic performance in this year’s BITS Pilani tournament is a testament to this. We are looking forward to some great results at our own forthcoming sports festival.”
