Dubai: Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President, UAE National Olympic Committee (UAE NOC), has reiterated his support for womens’ sports in the UAE.

The Emirates Women’s Day was held last weekend in Abu Dhabi by the Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy (SFBMLSA) in coordination with the UAE NOC. The celebrations consisted of a grand parade and a special demonstration of sports by various teams at the Yas Mall.

Speaking after the sports activities demonstrations held by the UAE NOC at Yas Mall to mark ‘UAE Women’s Day’, Shaikh Ahmad said: “August 28 is a special day as it commemorates a milestone in the history of women in the UAE. This year’s celebration at Yas Mall not only indicates a great collaboration between all sectors of our society, but also the intention of everyone concerned to continue this drive towards excellence in all fields, with particular attention on our women.”

Shaikh Ahmad further lauded the various contributions made by women towards the overall growth and progress of the nation. “And it is our duty to assist in the development of the sports sector for women. We are committed to women in sports and we are always keen to see this aspect of our society develop further. This can be done by participating in all mega events that involves our sportswomen,” he added.

Shaikh Ahmad also highlighted the role played by UAE women outside the sporting arena. “We have UAE women who have risen to the highest ranks on the international stage, and each time our women travel abroad they are the true ambassadors for our country,” Shaikh Ahmad added.

Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Vice-President, UAE NOC, hailed the launch of the unique initiative at the Yas Mall. “Emirati women today have succeeded in utilising the resources in place and moved steadily towards accomplishing their mission of serving their homeland, and one of these spheres is sport,” he said.
