Abu Dhabi: The 31st Abu Dhabi Striders Half Marathon and 10k returned to Yas Island on Friday with a record number of runners taking part on the mostly flat, International Association of Athletics Federations‎ (IAAF)-measured course. The winning times of 01:11:53 run by Ihaj Abdekarim in the half marathon and 00:33:37 run by Najib Akhlij in the 10k underlined the course’s reputation as one of the fastest in the UAE.

Organised by Abu Dhabi Striders, in partnership with Gulf Multi Sport, more than 2,000 runners started at Yas Waterworld, before the course took in the Yas Plaza, Yas Marina, Ferrari World and Yas Mall. They then returned to Yas Waterworld.

Following the event, runners were granted free entry to Yas Waterworld, allowing them to enjoy the well-earned opportunity to relax and cool down.

Steve Watson, Managing Partner of Gulf Multi Sport and member of Abu Dhabi Striders, said: “What a great location and where better to hold our signature race. The anticipation for this event was huge, with tickets sold out nearly six weeks after they went on sale.

“The rise in popularity of this event is testament to the growing awareness of health and fitness in the UAE and we are proud to share the goals of our fellow runners.”

Each entrant for the Abu Dhabi Striders Half Marathon and 10K received a Saucony race shirt, Championship timing, a certificate, medal and refreshments, as well as same-day entry to Yas Waterworld.

“Yas Waterworld is committed to supporting wider community initiatives and we are proud to have been the leading sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Striders Half Marathon,” said Tim Mow, General Manager of Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi. “The event is an excellent initiative that draws local and international runners to Yas Island and fits perfectly with the destination’s healthy living philosophy. It was an honour to host the participants at the start of their endeavour and celebrate their success at the finish line.”
