Dubai: Karlsen Espen from Scandinavian Airline and Mathys Christian from Swiss International were crowned champions in the 10km and 5km categories at the World Airline Road Race (WARR) 2015.

Held in Al Mamzar with participation of more than 1,000 runners representing more than 50 airlines from across the world, the WARR is an annual event in an attempt to bring the airline family closer.

Espen completed the 10km in a time of 34.47 minutes, while Deliss Sonja from Lufthansa was the star of the show when she took the top spot in the 5km and 10km races in the women’s category. Co-hosts Emirates and Fly Dubai also won a lot of individual awards in their respective age categories.

The prize presentation was held at Atlantis The Palm where the international WARR committee praised the local organisers from Emirates and Fly Dubai Running Clubs for an excellent show.

Zack Zainal, Chairman, Emirates Airline Runners Club flagged off the 10 km race, while Gaith Al Gaith, CEO, Fly Dubai welcomed the participants in the presence of Saeed Hareb, General Secretary, Dubai Sports Council.

Swiss International were the overall winners in the men’s section, followed by Emirates Airlines and Singapore Airlines, while in the ladies section Emirates were the champions followed by Singapore Airlines and Fly Dubai.

The annual WARR has been running for 34 years since the inaugural race held in San Francisco, California way back in 1982. Since then, the event has travelled around the world. Next year’s event will be held in Chicago.
