Singer Shaan, who will be seen judging The Voice India, says he will assess the contestants only on the basis of their vocals.

Shaan has hosted several singing shows — Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs, Star Voice of India and Star Voice of India 2.

He has also judged Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs from 2014-2015.

“I have been judging talent for a while now. I have been judging on the basis of the voice. I think it makes a lot more sense as you can be influenced by the body language and the confidence that the person is showing physically, which may not be there in the voice,” Shaan said in an interview.

“When I was a host, I got to meet a lot of great maestros and legends of this industry. You get to learn a lot, getting visibility on television is also something that helps an artist,” he said.

The reality show is an Indian adaptation of The Voice.

Shaan will judge the show along with Mika Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan and Himesh Reshamiya.

The Voice is an extremely popular format globally. It’s the most sought after show for any singer-musician. If you want to be on television and on a music show it has to be The Voice India,” Shaan said.

As far as talent is concerned, Shaan is looking for all-rounders in his team.

“I will prefer someone who is not a specialist or one dimensional. Someone who is comfortable across genres and can add to versatility is who I will be looking out for,” he said.

Being the coach, Shaan will be involved in selecting songs and how he can enhance the performance.

“I do have a little experience of being a coach and I’m going to put that in to practice to make this role even bigger and better. A lot of time and energy needs to be put into this, and I want to be able to be there for the contestants,” he added.

Asked what kind of challenges will he put across the contestants to enhance their talent, he said, “I will not want to stress them out and don’t want them to tire their voices, so it’s not going to be very rigorous. I would certainly want a lot of cohesive learning to happen from within the team.”

The Voice India will air in June on &TV.
