Angry Klibi resigns

1990 - Arab League Secretary General Chadli Klibi resigned after 11 years in office, the secretariat said. The resignation came amid divisions in the Arab world over the Gulf crisis. Klibi, 64, a Tunisian, held the post since 1979 when the League headquarters was transferred from Cairo to Tunis, following Egypt’s signing of a peace treaty with Israel. His term was extended for another five years in March 1989. There was no official reason given for his resignation. Arab diplomatic sources said Klibi was angry at criticism of him by some ministers at a League foreign ministers’ meeting on the Gulf crisis in Cairo last week. Klibi resigned one week before the next Cairo conference because he did not want to oversee the division of the organisation, according to analysts.
