Parvanov elected as Bulgaria President

2001 - Ex-Communist Georgi Parvanov was elected Bulgarian President, the first official results of run-off vote published by the central electoral commission showed. Results from 10 of Bulgaria’s 31 regional commissions gave Parvanov, leader of the ex-Communist Bulgarian Socialist Party, 52 per cent of the ballot. His rival, incumbent president Petar Stoyanov, who until the first round vote had been fairly sure of an easy victory, received 48 per cent of the votes, the commission said. Bulgarians, frustrated at years of painful reform that has visibly failed to improve their lot, had pinned their hopes on an ex-Communist after the country’s second poll upset in less than six months. Parvanov, whose party ran the country from 1994 until 1997, is the first ex-Communist President of Bulgaria since 1989.
