Frentzen wins San Marino Grand Prix

1997 - Heinz-Harald Frentzen answered his critics in the best possible way when he beat off fellow German Michael Schumacher to win the San Marino Grand Prix. It earned Frentzen his first Grand Prix win in 52 races and also his first points of the season since controversially being recruited by the Williams team in place of world champion Damon Hill. Frentzen held off a blistering challenge by Ferrari driver Schumacher in the closing laps to finish 1.2 seconds ahead of the twice world champion. It was the first time two German drivers had filled the first two places in a Formula One race. Frentzen has long lived in the shadow of Schumacher and had come in for increasing criticism after failing to gain a top-six place in the opening three races of the season.
