Not fit for the world’s largest democracy

I agree with people who think that the comment was one-sided (‘Is Narendra Modi the face of Hindu extremism?’ Gulf News, April 15). However, I agree more with those who are against Narendra Modi as the future Prime Minister (PM) of India. This doesn’t mean that I support Rahul Gandhi or Arvind Kejriwal. I am a Sikh and someone whose family was affected by the Sikh riots supported by Congress in 1984, however, that is not a reason for me to support Modi. India is a country with the second largest population in the world and the largest democracy. I fail to believe that Indians cannot find one person capable of leading the country out of its 1.2 billion-strong population. By standing united, regardless of caste, creed and religion, India managed to overcome British rule in 1947. It is one of the fastest developing countries, with resources that the entire world keeps an eye on. Having achieved so much, can’t India find one valid person to rule the country? Where are we heading? India is a country that is known for ’unity in diversity’, as it houses people from many different religions, who speak over 1,000 different languages. Hinduism is the largest and Islam the second largest religion in the country, yet India has almost as many Muslims as major Muslim countries like Pakistan and Indonesia. After the 2002 Gujarat riots, it was clear that Modi, being a Hindu, did not stop the killing of innocent Muslims. Yes, he might have developed major cities in Gujarat (not villages, where its maximum population resides), but is he someone who would think of developing Uttar Pradesh or Kashmir, which are Muslim-majority states of India? If the answer is no, how can people vote for him to be the next PM of the country? Shouldn’t the PM be an individual with an unbiased heart and strong leadership skills who is concerned about the welfare of the entire country and not just his own community?

Witnessed cruelty against Muslims

I was in Gujarat when the riots happened in 2002. I have witnessed the cruelty. It was unreal, the way innocent Muslims were killed. If Modi becomes the Prime Minister of India, there is no doubt that India will be in a big predicament. Even the Hindus in Gujarat are aware that the anti-Muslim riots were planned and there is sufficient proof to support it. I believe Modi was the mastermind behind the riots; he knew they were happening but being the head of state, he did nothing to stop it. How can he rule the largest democracy?

Positive developments

What do people know about Modi that they are criticising him? Have you been to Gujarat recently? There are a number of visible developments in the state over the past decade under Modi’s rule.

Best of luck

I don’t know much about Indian history. I am not an Indian, so many might not like my comment on this issue. But, as much as I have read, voting for Modi because of the recent developments in Gujarat is like expecting women to be attracted to men for using a particular deodorant, just like they do in advertisements. It won’t happen. I hope for the best for India. I hope that the most deserving candidate wins the elections.

False progress

For those who think that Gujarat has progressed in the last 10 years, do you know that more than 6,000 farmers have died in Gujarat in the same decade, according to National Crime Records Bureau? Is that progress? Is that an achievement?

Biased

It’s really sad that people write such comment pieces. It is unbelievable that people call a Prime Ministerial candidate a ‘terrorist’. If Modi was that bad, he would not have become the Chief Minister of India consistently. This is common sense. I would like to ask everyone who is talking about the 2002 Gujarat riots - what do they have to say about the numerous riots by the Congress party in their past six decades of rule? Why don’t they talk about Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh?

Hurting sentiments

I don’t think that Modi is fit to be the Prime Minister of India. I agree that there have been strong developments in Gujarat, but what about the religious sentiments of people?

Equality

A father does not destroy his nine daughters and focus solely on one son. A true leader treats his people equally, irrespective of caste, creed, gender, religion or anything else.
