"Nakba" means in Arabic "catastrophe" in reference to the birth of the state of Israel 68-years-ago in British-mandate Palestine, which led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who either fled or were driven out of their homes during the 1948 war over Israel's creation. The 1948 war was one of the biggest injustices of the modern age, whose consequences persist until now, said the Jordan Times.

“There was little effort on the part of the international community to end the conflict, simply because of the power of lobby groups working in favour of Israel in a hypocritical western political system that continues to dominate world affairs. No matter how much time passes, no matter how much political hypocrisy is shown by world capitals, Palestinians know that what is theirs will be returned to them and that justice will eventually prevail. Palestine will remain Palestine, despite all semantic and political games and its people of all faiths will one day be living side by side, free, equal, in peace and prosperity on their national soil, ” the paper said.

Al Nakba is a painful memory for Arabs and Muslims, during which Palestinian lands were lost and thousands of its people were killed as a result of the complicity of the international countries and weakness of nations in the region, said Qatar’s Al Sharq. “Al Nakba has become a wake-up call for Palestinians on all levels. The resistance began carrying out operations that have exhausted Israel, and the Palestinians rose in Intifadas (uprisings) that have destroyed Israeli arrogance. These uprisings have become a legitimate right, a strategic choice and a national and religious duty to liberate the entirety of Palestinian lands. The most important thing that Palestinians must strive towards during Al Nakba anniversary is to unify their rhetoric and stand against Israel, the enemy who will not differentiate between them.”

The UAE’s Al Khaleej said it was called Palestine 68 years ago, and that will remain its name until the end of days. “The siege, walls and colonies will not succeed in fabricating geography and history. The Palestinians resisted the Haganah, Irgun and Stern Gang and the British colonial forces and so the Palestinians will continue to resist the Occupation for many generations. The new generation will be handed the banner of resistance from those who preceded them and never surrender. Despite the chaotic storms erupting everywhere, rain will eventually fall and the real spring will come — a victory that is charged by the hundreds of thousands of Palestinian martyrs who have given up everything for this victory.

The spirit of the Palestinians has not disappeared, instead it has only grown stronger over time, said Lebanon’s Daily Star. “If petty politics and squabbling stand in the way, future generations will never forgive today’s leadership and the idea of a free Palestine will join the club of dreams that turned into nightmares. It’s time the Palestinian leadership completely redirects its approach. Because at this crucial juncture, when the map of the region is being so violently redrawn, the Palestinians are under threat of being trampled upon and overlooked.”

For Arabs, the Israeli Independence Day is known as Al Nakba; two events that fall on the same date and reflect the massive dilemma brought about with the establishment of the Israeli state, said the London-based Pan-Arab paper Al Quds Al Arabi. “Israel possesses one of the most powerful armies in the world, its security body is considered the most dangerous... Yet, Palestinians continue to adopt all forms of an unceasing struggle against it.”
