With the rise of social media and its increased prominence amongst its users, we ask: Is social media good for our society? On one hand, it enables us to stay connected with friends and family all over the world, but on the other hand, it completely eliminates our need for actual social interaction. Not only is it limiting our face-to-face interaction but it is also posing as a threat to our privacy as even with privacy settings, you cannot ensure that your information and pictures remain private. We spend numerous hours browsing from one social networking site to another, but are we actually benefitting from it or is it merely a way to waste time?
The focus of this week’s debate is on social media and whether it does more good than bad?
These are the statements to be debated:
• Yes, social networking sites facilitate face-to-face interaction.
• No, social media causes people to spend less time interacting face-to-face.
• Yes, social media sites empower individuals to make social change and do social good on a community level.
• No, social networking sites facilitate cyberbullying.
• Yes, social media sites help employers find employees and job-seekers find work.
• No, using social media can harm job stability and employment prospects.
Participants will be required to clearly state whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ the statement and provide their supporting arguments for the same.
