America’s decision to deny a visa to Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations Hamid Abutalebi is likely to have a multitude of repercussions. Firstly, it hands a victory to the Israel lobby that has been shocked at its sidelining by a US administration that is adamant on mending ties with Iran. Secondly, it sets a precedent that is likely to bring into question Washington’s prerogatives as the host nation of the world body. Thirdly, it risks derailing the process of reconciliation between Iran and the international community that grants Iranian hardliners a victory in their effort to slam the brakes on the talks.

The US needs to realise that instead of working in favour of radicals on both sides, it needs to put this ambassador issue aside and fulfil its responsibility as a global player. Such moves make both moderates, President Barack Obama and President Hassan Rouhani, look weak domestically and internationally. The region cannot afford another radical in the presidential seat should talks fail due to Congress’ bickering over a three-decade-old issue that America’s European allies overlooked when they hosted the ambassador.
