Islamabad Unidentified gunmen shot dead a serving colonel of the Pakistan Army in Peshawar, capital of militancy-plagued northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said.

Colonel Tahir Azim was attacked in Hayatabad neighbourhood of Peshawar and police said two assailants on a motorcycle were involved in the shooting.

The army officer was on his way home from a mosque when he came under attack.

According to reports, two brothers of the deceased were shot dead in attacks in 2004 and 2005. The two had no association with the armed forces.

Tahir Azeem was posted in Rawalpindi and he was in Hayatabad to visit his family.

Pakistani security forces are engaged in an offensive against militants in northwestern federally administered tribal areas bordering Afghanistan since June last year.

The army has also been carrying out intelligence-based operations across the country in the ongoing anti-terrorism drive.
