Patna: A 25-year-old in Bihar was gang-raped by four men in her husband’s presence in the latest incident of rape which has rocked the state in recent weeks. Police have registered a case against the accused but all are absconding.

The incident took place in the southern Bihar’s Nawada district on late Tuesday evening but was reported to the police on Wednesday.

Police said the woman was returning to her home along with her husband after day’s hard work in the evening when four youths held her captive just outside her village and gang-raped her after tying her husband to a tree. The victim’s husband is also a farm labourer. The incident took place just when the victim was about to reach her village of Pipra.

Police raids

Soon after the incident was reported to the police, the victim was sent to the local government hospital for medical examination. The doctors confirmed that she had been raped.

The police are conducting raids to arrest the accused youths. “We have taken the matter very seriously and raids are on to nab the fleeing accused,” the local district superintendent of police Chandrika Prasad said today.

A flood of rape incidents has rocked the state this year even as the government is finding it difficult to bring the situation under control despite a reshuffle in the police department. According to a latest police report, 593 cases of rape were reported in the first six months of this year which means an average of three women are raped everyday in Bihar.
