Hyderabad: They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And Sania Mirza is furious at the way her integrity is being questioned by political parties like the BJP.

She has nothing but contempt for those who question her Hyderabadi origin or her citizenship following her marriage to Pakistani cricketer, Shoaib Malek.

Since they tied the knot on April 12, 2010, the couple has been dividing their time moving between India, Dubai and sometimes, Pakistan. However, at the time of the wedding, Sania had made it clear to the world that she had no plans of settling down in Pakistan. “As we are both sports persons and our profession requires us to be on the move, we will be mostly based in Dubai,” her husband Shoaib Malek had said. Occasionally Sania visited her in-laws in Pakistan and spent some time there. But she steered clear of any controversy on issues like Indo-Pakistan relations.

Clear stand

“I have always made it clear that I will remain an Indian citizen,” she has repeatedly declared to the media. “Pakistan is my ‘sasural’ [in-laws’ place]. But India is my home.”

In recent times, there were rumours of their marriage hitting a rough patch and the tabloids had a field day, but Sania denied the rift. “Our marriage has not been easy because we are professional athletes and come from different countries. We knew there would be stress on us but we have managed it well so far. There are no problems between us at all,” she had said.
