Kolkata: The Park Street rape victim is to file a defamation case against Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar for her derogatory statement.

Speaking on national television while sympathising for the Delhi rape victim, Ghosh said on December 28: “If you’re referring to the Park Street rape, see that is a different case altogether. That was not at all a rape case. It was a misunderstanding between the two parties involved, between a lady and her client. This was not a rape.”

Speaking to Gulf News, the victim, who is also a mother of two children said, “It is quite pathetic that a member of the state’s ruling party is calling me a sex worker, when the state police has admitted it as rape.”

“For the last one year me and my family are going through hell as we are facing threats and I cannot go out to work and am not in a position to pay for the children’s school fees. To add to that she is insulting us. I felt like committing suicide after hearing this,” she said.

At the time of the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had claimed it as a fabricated story. Even as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detective Department) Damayanti Sen was successful in establishing that the case was indeed rape.

It has been almost a year since the incident happened in February last year, but the prime accused is still at large.

“I am contemplating to put up my own lawyer even if it means borrowing more money. When the leaders of ruling class has such contempt against me I am little faith whether the public prosecutor will take up my case seriously and ensure there is justice,” the victim added.

Though Ghosh was unwilling to talk in spite of repeated phone calls, TMC leaders inform that the party leadership is unhappy with her comments. Industry Minister and party chief whip Parth Chatterjee has sent a message to all leaders to seek prior permission of the party before going to media shows.

“The statement was uncalled for especially at a time when there is so much anger all over the country with a lack of security for women. In her attempt to protect the state government, she has landed up creating an uncalled for controversy and being a women it has created more trouble for her,” said a TMC leader unwilling to be named.
