Hyderabad: The National Women’s Commission issued a notice to the Cyberabad Police Commissioner to submit a report about the “snake gang” notorious for threatening women with snakes and raping them. The matter came to light recently with Cyberabad police arresting seven members of the gang active in Pahadi Shareef area of Hyderabad.

Police have booked a case under Nirbhaya act against the gang led by Faisal Daini. Another member of the gang was identified as Salam Hamdi.

Police said the gang had attacked the woman in a farmhouse in the Shaheen Nagar area where she was staying with her fiancee. The gang, which entered the farmhouse by scaling a wall, first overpowered her fiancee and tied him before attacking the woman.

“The gang members terrorised her with a big snake, which one member of the gang was carrying. She was allegedly raped by four members of the gang,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Shamshabad Sudarshan said. The woman, whose marriage was due shortly, was also tortured brutally.

Police said the gang shot the scenes of their crime with a mobile phone and threatened to publish the video on Facebook if she lodged a complaint with the police.

She also tried to commit suicide after the incident but was saved.

Even as the police were investigating the case, the Women’s Commission has directed the Cyberabad police to submit a detailed report about all the activities of the gang as there were reports that it might have also targeted other women in a similar way.

Police suspect that this gang was involved in at least 11 such cases of rapes in Barkas and surrounding areas in Hyderabad. However only in the latest case the victims dared to come forward and lodge a complaint with the police.

Police say some members of the gang were already arrested in connection with other anti-social activities. While seven members have already been arrested, a search was on for two others.
