Sydney: An Etihad Airways jet made an emergency landing in Brisbane on Thursday after issuing a mayday distress call, airport officials said.

The A330 passenger plane landed safely after what the Brisbane Courier Mail said was “an in-flight emergency” shortly after take off.

All passengers and crew are safe, an Etihad spokesman told Gulf News on Thursday.

“Etihad Airways Airbus A330-200 operating flight EY 473 from Brisbane to Singapore with 164 passengers and 11 crew on board returned to Brisbane due to a flight deck instrument failure," said the spokesman.

The flight crew followed all standard operational procedures, declared an emergency, and made a precautionary landing, the spokesman said. He said passengers are being rebooked to continue their journey on alternate carriers.

An airport official said of the Abu-Dhabi-based jet: “We are not sure why the call was issued but the plane landed safely. As is standard procedure, all emergency services were on standby.”

The scare comes just days after Etihad placed an order for 87 Airbus planes valued at around $19 billion at list prices, including A330s,  the report said.
