Dubai: A woman who went to a beauty salon to dye her hair ended up losing it instead.

A 36-year-old Tunisian hairstylist and a 29-year-old Syrian salon manager, both women, were on Tuesday convicted of risking the 27-year-old Moroccan woman’s health by using an expired product to dye her hair.

The hairstylist and manager pleaded not guilty to charges of endangering the victim’s health before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court.

The court, however, found them guilty and fined them Dh5,000 each.

The incident took place at a salon on Jumeirah Beach Road in January.

The victim testified that the hairstylist covered her hair with a cap for an hour. “When she removed it and started washing my hair, it started falling in big chunks. I screamed at her until another staffer came to help her clean my hair. So much of my hair fell that I even saw my scalp. I immediately called the police,” she said.

Police referred the victim to the Dubai Health Authority for examination and it was confirmed that her hair loss was caused by the dye used.

Two employees at the salon — a Filipina and a Moroccan — testified that the hairstylist did not use the dye requested by the victim and instead used an expired product.

They also told prosecutors that shortly after the incident, the salon manager asked other staff to get rid of the expired dye.

They alleged that they were sacked from the salon because they gave a statement that was not in the defendants’ favour. “The salon manager and her business partner asked us to allege that the victim was losing her hair before she came to the salon. When they learnt about our testimony, the sacked us,” the Filipina claimed.

The ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
