Al Ain: Strong shamal (north-westerly) winds are likely to sweep through the country pushing down temperatures and triggering morning fog, following the spate of torrential rain, hailstorms, wind and floods.

The national weather bureau has warned people of rough seas, morning fog, dusty conditions and poor visibility. Fog is expected on Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Motorists have been advised to take precautionary measures in cases of poor visibility. Seafarers have also been asked to postpone their trips until Tuesday morning.

The north-westerly winds, with expected speeds of 28km/h to 38km/h, are likely to be 60km/h at times in coastal and mountainous regions.

The severe weather has affected the entire country over the past five days, with the highest amount of rainfall on Friday night. The highest rainfall recorded by the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology was 34.6mm in Suwaihan. Torrential rain and thunderstorms also hit Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and parts of Sharjah.

The unstable weather was accompanied by fresh to strong winds, at times exceeding speeds of 55km/h that blew up dust and sand, reducing visibility to less than 500 metres in places. Visibility has, however, substantially improved following the rain, said forecasters.

A hailstorm took residents in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman by surprise on Friday night. People were seen running for shelter from pea-sized hail and flying debris that shattered car windscreens.

Homes in mountainous and low-lying areas in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Khor Fakkan. were flooded. Rain and strong winds also caused power disruption in some areas.

Emergency services have been working round the clock to restore power and clear waterlogged roads, residential areas, and wadis.

Conditions will be hazy and partly cloudy on Monday with wind kicking up dust. The sea will be rough and humidity is likely to increase in some coastal and inland areas. There is also a chance of fog and the temperature is likely to hover around 15 to 32 degrees Celsius.
