Dubai: The national weather bureau has warned residents in the southern and eastern part of the country of heavy rain with thunderstorms and low visibility for the next three days.

“We are currently affected by the extension of the Indian monsoon associated with easterly and south-easterly winds coming from the Arabian Sea with lots of water vapour that are obstructed by the mountains and develop into rain clouds,” a forecaster from the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology told Gulf News.

The forecaster said the thunderstorms will affect the eastern and southern parts of the country such as Fujairah, Al Ain, Liwa, and Hamim, among others, from Monday to Wednesday but only in the afternoon.

Heavy thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon in these places that will cause temperatures to drop by two to three degrees Celsius.

Light showers were recorded in southern Fujairah and Hatta on Sunday afternoon.

The forecaster said the rain clouds are also associated with strong winds that could cause blowing dust that may cause visibility to deteriorate in the southern and internally exposed areas in the north. Visibility could drop to 2,000 metres to 1,500 metres or 1,000 metres.

The rest of the country will experience partly cloudy weather, with temperatures of about 45C.

The relative humidity will increase by Monday night and early morning Tuesday over some western coastal areas, with a chance of some mist formation. Fog covered most western areas early Sunday morning such as Liwa, Madinat Zayed and Ruwais, with visibility dropping to 50 metres.

The sea will be slight to moderate in the Arabian Gulf and rough in Oman Sea.
