Umm Al Quwain: A new police campaign, ‘A Summer Without Accidents’, is now under way in Umm Al Quwain.

The campaign aims to reduce all types of accidents that take place during the summer holidays and suggest a number of guidelines for motorists setting off on long summer holiday journeys.

Brochures in both Arabic and English will be distributed on roads and in shopping malls and information will also be posted online, said police on Sunday.

“Our objective is to spread a traffic culture among community members, especially youths, and to reduce accidents caused by some people during the summer by equipping them with the best knowledge about driving safely, including maintaining their car, especially before embarking on long journeys,” said Colonel Saeed Obaid Bin Aran, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department at UAQ Police.

“Checking car tyres should be also mandatory and motorists should conduct safety checks periodically, especially in hot weather conditions, to avoid the threat of serious accidents,”

Col Bin Aran said motorists travelling for long distances need to take care to drive safely.

“Any loads on the car must not be higher than 60 centimetres because overloading may cause skidding and accidents. Motorists should also be more cautious when overtaking heavy trucks, make sure the road is clear, leave enough safety space, and ensure that their vehicles are properly lit. Motorists must not drive at a speed higher than 120km/h,” he added.

Col Bin Aran urged motorists to avoid driving if one feels tired and advised them to use seat belts, as it will help avoid grave accidents and hefty fines.

“Babies and young children should also be properly put in their child car seats,” he said
