Dubai: At least 50 more trains are currently being built in France that will be added to the existing fleet of Dubai Metro, and the new cabins look sleek and top of the line.

Dubai Media Office has just released a video of transport officials visiting the construction site, allowing UAE commuters a sneak peek of the new designs.

The exterior of the new trains still retain the identity of the Dubai Metro, but there have been modifications incorporated into the designs.

The handles will sport a new look, as well as the lighting and locations of digital signage (VBSD), which will also feature an illuminated dynamic map for the metro route and stations.

Out of the 50 new trains being built, 15 will be utilised to serve Expo 2020, while the other 35 units will be added to the main Dubai Metro system. A delegation from Dubai has recently visited France to check out the progress of the manufacturing of the new carriages.

“Seats will be transversal in the Gold Class, and longitudinal in the Silver Class as well as Ladies & Children Carriage. The exterior design of trains will remain as it is to maintain the design identity of the Dubai Metro and its familiar colours to the public,” said Mattar Al Tayer,director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors of  Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which led the delegation who visited France.

The Alstom-led consortium Expollink had earlier entered a deal with RTA to design and build the extension of Dubai’s Red metro line and upgrade the system of the existing line. The total value of the project is 2.6 billion euros.

The 15-kilometre metro extension project, known as Route 2020, will feature seven stations, including an interchange station, one station at Expo site, three elevated stations and two underground stations.

It is expected to accommodate 46,000 commuters every hour in both directions.
