Sharjah: Within two week of the new federal traffic law coming into effect on July 1, Sharjah Police recorded 10,358 traffic offences, it was announced on Saturday

The amended traffic law includes stiff penalties aims at curbing road fatalities.

Official statistics released by Sharjah Police on Saturday showed that 10,358 fines were issued from July 1 to July 13. Most fines were issued to jay walkers for crossing roads from undesignated areas.

Major Mohammad Alai Al Naqbi, Head of Traffic and Patrol Department at the Sharjah Police, said that the new traffic law will make driving in Sharjah more safe.

“[The law] is aimed at ensuring the safety of the society as a whole and reducing injuries and deaths due to traffic accidents,” Major Al Naqbi said.

He pointed out that most traffic accidents occur when motorists fail to abide by the traffic rules — be it regarding speed limits, respecting the red signal, overtaking from the wrong side or using the hard shoulder to overtake.

He pointed out that Sharjah Police used social media channels to educate motorists about the new traffic laws. He said more than 100,000 booklets [in Arabic and English], containing all articles of the new traffic law were also distributed.

He said people were also informed through social media channels about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving and not fastening the seat belts.
