Abu Dhabi: Residents will have to pay for parking in two new sections of downtown Abu Dhabi, the emirate of Abu Dhabi’s transport sector regulator announced today (October 19).

A total of 579 parking bays are located in these two sectors, W34 in Al Bateen area and W1-01 in Corniche area, the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (DMAT) statement said. The slots will become paid from Sunday onwards.

W34 is bound by King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz road, Al Falah Street, Al Yasat Street and Marfa Al Bateen Street. It includes 379 parking spaces. It houses the Central Bank of the UAE.

W1-01 is surrounded by Corniche beach, Corniche Street and Street 1, and it has 200 premium parking slots.

Mohammed Hamad Al Muhairi, general manager of parking (Mawaqif) at DMAT, said that the paid spaces should offer long-term solutions to concerns about traffic flow and parking space availability in these areas. He added that it is illegal to park on bays marked yellow and grey, as well as undesignated areas like roads, drop-off and pick-up points, pedestrian crossings, access points and slots for fire hydrants.
