Dubai: With the numbers of travellers increasing at Dubai International Airport by the year, officials are urging people to use smart gates to cut down on time and effort.

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai, has initiated the setting up of the next generation of smart gates which will be installed in Terminals 1,2,3 and the Maktoum International Airport by the first quarter of 2018.

Passengers can avail of various methods to enjoy speedy clearance both while arriving and on departure.

Emirates ID cards

UAE residents are encouraged to use the Emirates ID cards at any smart gate.

Just swipe the Emirates ID card at the gate, place your finger for a scan as shown in the instructions and the gate doors will open to allow you through.

Biometric passports

Travellers can use the smart gate to cross by using their biometric passports which contain an electronic chip. The chip carries all the information in the physical passport as well as additional details including fingerprints, iris scans and face-recognition data. Smart gates cut down the procedural time to within 10 to 20 seconds.

UAE Wallet

Travellers departing from Dubai International Airport can now use their smart phones at the smart gates instead of their passports if they want.

The new facility is expected to reduce departure clearance time to 15 seconds per passenger. The UAE Wallet app can be used in Terminal 3. It will be operational in all terminals after the wallet is linked with other airlines.

Users can register to UAE wallet any time before their travel day. After registering, users can present required travel machine-readable bar codes generated within UAE Wallet app to access airport gates.

The service supports seamless integration among different entities during the execution of government services.

Note:

Children under 15 cannot avail of smart gates but there will be an officer to complete their procedure at the normal gates.
