Dubai: In a bid to encourage motorists to follow speed limits on roads, Dubai Police will reward good drivers with points that can be redeemed for vouchers and gifts, an official said on Tuesday.
Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, told Gulf News that the idea behind the initiative is to encourage drivers to earn points by not exceeding speed limits.
“It is a unique idea and is part of Dubai Police’s strategy to have safer roads and reduce casualties [in accidents]. We will start the programme after Gitex Technology Week. Drivers will earn white points by registering in the programme,” Maj-Gen Al Merri said.
Drivers can log in to Dubai Police app and register in the programme after Gitex.
A map will show the driver on the road and he can check points earned by him on the app.
The driver will get a point for every few kilometres if he didn’t exceed the speed limit. But if he exceeds the limit, the point will be deducted from his account.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the Traffic Department, said only Dubai-registered vehicles will be eligible for the programme and the points can be earned every five or ten kilometres.
“We will specify how many kilometres to get a white point soon and when the driver collects enough points, he can click on the link in the app to guide him to different options to redeem them. It can be redeemed for shopping vouchers or other options,” Brigadier Al Mazroui said.
“Speeding is a serious offence in Dubai which cause death and injuries every year. With this programme, we hope to motivate drivers to follow speed limits.”
Based on their points, the app will show the ranking of drivers who are registered for the programme and drivers can form teams to compete for points.
“Motorists can form a team and compete with other teams to see who earns higher points,” Brigadier Al Mazroui added.
