Dubai: A picture of an accident involving the new Dubai Tram taken more than a month ago is going viral as the tram opened for passenger service on Wednesday.

Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook had become abuzz with "news" that the tram has met with an accident, giving the impression that it took place on Wednesday, its first day of rollout for the public.

Gulf News had reported the accident early in October, when it actually happened.

On Wednesday, the old story shot up to the top of reader-driven "most viewed" list on gulfnews.com, an indication the old story may have been shared as latest "news" on the Dubai tram on social media.

The October 2 accident took place near the Dubai College on Al Sufouh Road, when a woman driving a white sedan, hit a tram on a routine test run.

The motorist on the occasion had rammed into a running tram after jumping a red light.

According to Dubai Police, neither the driver nor anybody else was hurt in the accident, but the vehicle sustained damages to its front portion, the tram escaped with only minimal damage.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver exited the Dubai College car park and collided with the oncoming tram.

To dispel rumours, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority had also used social media, Tweeting that the photo is old.
