Dubai: Dubai will make a bid for yet another Guinness World Record to its name with the world’s longest 22 carat gold chain measuring five kilometres and weighing 180kg.

Part of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) promotions, the world record attempt is being made by Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group in association with four major jewellers in town – Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Siroya, Sky Jewellers and Jewel One.

Dubbed the Dubai Celebration Chain, the world record attempt is part of the 20th anniversary festivities of DSF, which will run between January 1 and February 1, 2015.

“This year being the 20th year of DSF, a major milestone in Dubai’s calendar, Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment wanted to do something big and unique and, going with the city’s trend in creating world records, we came up with this idea of making the longest gold chain,” said Tawhid Abdullah, chairman of Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, after announcing the project.

What is interesting is that any person can be part of this unique project by booking a portion of the chain, which will be delivered to them once the record is set.

“Work on the monstrous chain has already begun and we are giving people a chance to be part of this world record. If anybody is interested in having a piece of the chain they can approach any of the four manufacturers and book their desired portion by paying a deposit. The order will be delivered by January 10,” informed Abdullah.

Customers will have an option of having it as bracelets or as chains, ranging from seven to eight grams (bracelets) and up to 26 grams for chains. The length of the chains could vary between 22cm to 26cm.

Around 70 workers are busy putting the chain together, working 10 hours a day, and the chain is expected be ready by the end of December.

Once the chain is measured by the Guinness World Records, the chain will be put on display for a couple of days.

“We will put the chain on display at the Gold Souq for two to three days in the first week of January. The display itself will spread for 200 metres and will take six hours for the workers to put up. We are currently working on the logistics of the project, cooperating closely with Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority,” he said.

Going with the trend of the bigger the better, the gold promotion for the 20th DSF has also been expanded, with 100kg of gold and 40 carats of diamonds to be won.

“This DSF we have the biggest ever gold and jewellery promotion with Dh15 million worth of gold and diamonds to be won on every purchase of just Dh500,” said Siroya Chandra Prakash, Vice-Chairman of Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group.

Starting from January 1, 2015, one kilo of gold and one carat of diamond will be up for grabs every day, apart from a weekly draw for five kilos of gold. At the end of the month there will be a mega draw for one prize of 20kg gold, two 10 kg gold prizes and one five carat diamond prize.

The last day of the promotion will be February 1, 2015.
