Even before you venture into Louvre Abu Dhabi, be prepared to encounter a masterpiece.

The centrepiece of the museum is its gigantic, approximately 7,500-tonne, domed-roof.

Inspired by the architecture and traditions of the UAE, French architect Jean Nouvel’s dome is a complex, geometric constellation of 7,850 stars, built in eight layers.

It weighs as much as the Eiffel Tower in Paris!

According to Louvre Abu Dhabi’s website, the dome creates a ‘Rain of Light’ effect, when the sun passes overhead, and filters through the perforations in the roof. It is inspired by the palm trees of Abu Dhabi and the dappled light that filters through the leaves.

So before you walk through the doors on opening day, on November 11, soak in this architectural marvel of light and shade.
