Dubai: Popular Indian singer Usha Uthup will perform at a mega Diwali show to be held in Dubai on October 27.
The event, called Diwali Utsav, will be organised under the framework of “India@70” to celebrate the 70 years of India’s independence, Consul-General of India in Dubai Vipul said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The event is being organised by Friends of India (FoI) Events under the patronage of the Indian Consulate.
“Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in India. It is celebrated in a grand manner in Dubai and the UAE as well. This year, being the 70th year of Independence of India, we are organising this event in association with the FoI Events within the India@70 framework under which the Consulate has planned to conduct 70 events throughout the year,” Vipul said.
N. Mohan, coordinator for CSR activities at FoI, said 7,000 people, including 3,000 families and 1,000 labourers, are expected to attend the event to be held on the Amity University campus.
He said the labourers will be given free transportation and entry.
Cultural programmes from various states of India will be showcased at the event under the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’. There will be competitions for traditional dance performances from around 15 Indian states.
Usha Uthup, who will perform for the audience, will also be a judge for the dance competition, Mohan said.
“A lot of our children grow here and most of the traditional games that we play back home are not known to them. We are giving a platform for them to play those games as well,” he said.
There will also be a rangoli competition for 30 teams.
The event tickets are priced at Dh20, Dh50 and Dh100 to attract a large crowd, Mohan said.
