The Waste Management Department of the civic body on Monday said it has been successful in attracting environmental volunteers from government and private institutions and others to its initiative titled An Hour with the Cleaner, making it a golden opportunity for volunteering enthusiasts that clearly contributes to spreading a culture of social responsibility among the public.

The initiative is an ongoing opportunity to volunteer all year-round without limiting volunteers to a campaign or a programme of cleanliness, Abdul Majeed Abdul Aziz Al Saifaie, director of Waste Management Department said.

“The initiative is witnessing an increasing demand year after year, and this year the participation rose to 1,300 volunteers representing 25 entities from all segments of the society, whether they are students or workers or employees or families. Volunteering is a civilized act that reflects the progress of people,” he said.

“As a result of the initiative, we were able to get 1,300 hours of work that helped to undertake cleaning operations such as removing cigarette butts on beaches, random posters in commercial areas and the waste on shores.”

He said the initiative also achieved a new record as the environmental volunteers’ team managed to collect nearly 350,000 cigarette butts from Umm Suqeim and Mamzar beaches by using 160 working hours carried out by 160 participants.

“We are always keen to bring out all voluntary participations with the best image as we provide all the work requirements for volunteers and their efforts are documented in the Municipality approved social networking channels and newspapers, in addition to honouring them on the ground by giving them the appreciation and participation certificates. The cleaning worker delivers these certificates to them as our gratitude and appreciation for their efforts in accomplishing the volunteer work.”

Al Saifaie, who also heads the awareness team in the field of Sustainable Waste Management, emphasized on the importance of creating and supporting such volunteering opportunities as they have clear aims in supporting the preservation of the environment and the general appearance of the emirate.

Volunteer work today has become an important aspect in achieving the vitalization of communities and a mainstay for the dissemination of the culture of social responsibility among members of the society, he noted.
