Sharjah: The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) is holding a number of activities and programmes to engage the public at Al Majaz Waterfront during the emirate’s week of innovation which started on Thursday, it was announced.

As part of the UAE Innovation Month, being held this month across all seven emirates, the EPAA is showcasing information about their Sustainability Award competition and an exhibition on nature reserves and the protection of indigenous plants during the emirate’s week of innovation.

Being held till February 21, a number of activities, programmes, exhibitions and presentations will be open to everyone who has an interest in the environment and related innovations from 10am to 8pm, the authority said.

Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, EPAA chairperson, said the organisation’s participation in the UAE Innovation Week will entail various activities and events based on specialised EPAA programmes, in order to highlight its work and related issues to members of the public.

“Public support and engagement in our work is of paramount importance if we were to create a safe and sustainable environment for generations to come and for all living species in the UAE. Therefore, the EPAA welcomes this opportunity to participate in Sharjah’s Innovation Week in order to showcase how we use innovative solutions in environmental protection,” she said.

The UAE Innovation Month is the largest celebration of its kind that seeks to celebrate the best in ideas on innovation from the spectrum of government and private sectors, as well as from the public.

The EPAA is presenting an exhibition on the Sharjah Sustainability Award, and another exhibition on its experience with nature reserves, as well as making a presentation on its efforts to promote the cultivation of perennial local plants.

The EPAA is also presenting some of its efforts to promote the cultivation of indigenous local plants, including the introduction of an innovative idea launched by the EPAA to encourage their cultivation. This includes a box containing Ghaf plant, seeds in addition to scientific information about Ghaf trees and a simplified explanation of how to grow them. The boxes will be distributed to visitors of the events during the week.
