Sharjah: Fake News is the biggest challenge facing the media today, said the two time Pulitzer Award winning journalist Mohammad Muheisen, speaking at the opening session of the Xposure 2017 in Sharjah today.
His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Ruler of Sharjah and Member of the UAE Supreme Council, opened the four-day exhibition today at the Expo Centre Sharjah.
Offering a tribute to multi-award winning German war photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus, who lost her life covering the conflict in Afghanistan in 2014, Muheisen said that in a world where everything is online, it is hard to verify what is real and what is fake.
“As we face the challenge of fake news and doctored pictures we have greater responsibility to make sure we are true to our job like Anja was throughout her career,” said Muheisen.
The opening session also saw Shaikh Sultan Bin Ahmad, Chairman of Sharjah Media Council, address the gathering that a galaxy of 32 star photographers from around the world.
Paul Nicklen, a photographer and marine biologist with special focus on the polar regions gave a keynote address, drawing people’s attention to the changing landscape of the Arctic due to climate change.
The four-day event will showcase award-wining images, reflecting different aspects of life as people live across the globe as well as the imaginary world that we can only see through the lenses.
The region’s leading photography exhibition will see internationally-acclaimed photographers sharing their expertise to help those in the region who seek to engage better with the world around them through their cameras.
