Sharjah: Sharjah Police have launched a seat-belt safety campaign aimed at encouraging parents to protect their children.

The campaign was launched in cooperation with the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.

Police officers are distributing brochures about traffic laws and car seats for children, to motorists on different roads of the emirate.

Major Abdul Rahman Khatr, Director of Traffic Awareness Branch at Sharjah Police, said that police have launched the initiative to raise awareness about the importance of providing children with car seats, ensuring their seat belts are fastened and that they are well seated in the back seat of the vehicle.

“Parents put their children at risk when they let them sit on the back seat without the child seat. In some accidents, children were thrown out of the window. Buckling them up in child seats can reduce the impact of a traffic accident,” he said.

The campaign is in preparation for the implementation of amendments to the Federal Traffic Law which will be implemented from July 1. The new rule states that motorists and passengers must fasten their seat belts and children under 4 should be provided with car seats.

Violators will be fined Dh400 and four black points added to their driving licence.
