Dubai: The opening weekend of the Dubai Fitness Challenge was a success with more than 25,000 participants sweating it out under the sun and trying over 40 different sports and group exercises during the two-day festival.

The Fitness Challenge at Safa Park on Friday also held the Global Mala yoga event hosted by YogaFest Dubai that drew more than 1,000 yoga enthusiasts in the two-hour yogathon.

Some of the sports included American football, basketball, boxing, cricket, golf, plyo box vertical jump, strength training, suspension training, touch rugby and volleyball. Children had their own zones as well.

Saeed Hareb, General Secretary of Dubai Sports Council, was pleased with the huge turnout on the opening weekend.

“It was great to see the huge turnout as well. However, is just the start. The goal … is to make Dubai the most active city in the world, and we at Dubai Sports Council are committed to achieving those lofty ideals and turning Dubai into a land of health, happiness and vitality,” Hareb said.

Various organisations and entities are participating in the challenge such as Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Dubai Police, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), DP World, Dubai Economy (Department of Economic Development — DED), Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Tourism and RTA, du, Meraas, SkyDive Dubai, Emaar, Nakeel, Dubai Holding, Dubai Silicon Oasis, among others.

For Dubai Police, Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said they organising 54 different sports activities suited to individuals, groups and people of determination, in addition to police personnel, their families and anyone who wants to keep fit through sports.

Employees of Dubai’s RTA also took part in the ‘Dubai Fitness Challenge’ initiative that kicked off on Friday. At the park and in the office.

Ebrahim Al Haddad, Director of Commercial and Investment cum Head of Sports Team of RTA, said the events include InBody Analysis for men and women, stairs climbing challenge for men and women, drivers’ football tournament and drivers’ running tournament, among others.
