Sharjah: The largest handmade paper-quilled UAE flag was on display at the Indian Association of Sharjah on December 4.

The piece was made by Surya Bala, a quilling enthusiast, and displayed as part of National Day celebrations.

The 345-square-foot (32-square-metre) handmade flag was made up of 5mm thick 100,000 coloured strips of paper with 4kg of glue and weighs more than 50kg. Bala has spent over 2,000 hours on this project, over a period of 12 months. She has applied for entry into the Guinness World Records and is currently awaiting confirmation.

The 26-year-old from India, who is a civil engineer at Larsen and Toubro in Sharjah, said she was “amazed” at how the UAE is hosting a diversity of nationalities and “extending its love and peace to the people”. Soon after her arrival to the UAE a year ago, Bala chose to create an artistic masterpiece and what can potentially be the largest quilled piece in the world — to show her gratitude to the UAE.

“I dedicate this handmade quilled flag to the people of this nation because I feel extremely lucky and fortunate to be here.”

Taking up paper quilling around six years ago, Bala often made smaller projects and was pleasantly surprised to receive positive feedback from family and friends.
