Sharjah: A gang of four people who allegedly stole a number of vehicles had been arrested, police said on Monday.

A senior official at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Sharjah Police said the gang stole vehicles that were parked in sandy and dimly-lit areas in the emirate.

The official did not specify how many vehicles were stolen, but said that the suspects who were arrested include two Asians and two Arabs.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Hassan, head of Criminal and Investigation Department, said police launched an investigation after they received complaints from a number of car owners.

After the suspects were identified and arrested, they all confessed that they had stolen many cars from different areas in the emirate.

Their case had been referred to the Public Prosecution.

The suspects had the same modus operandi: after breaking open the target vehicles, the gang members moved them to another place, changed the keys, then sold them to unsuspecting buyers.

Lt. Col. Hassan urged motorists to not leave their vehicles in poorly-lit places and sandy areas.

The police also urged the public to alert them about any suspicious activities.
