Dubai: In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the Dubai Mums Helping Hand group is planning a ‘pampering day’ event at a Dubai women’s labour accommodation, organisers said.
The all-day event, which will take place on February 12, will offer 450 women free haircuts, massages, and craft-making, as well as the chance to shop for free.
“We will have around 50 volunteers, 15 hairdressers, and 15 masseuses, to help out on the day,” said Stephanie Sutherland, head of the Dubai Mum’s Helping Hands group.
The women, who work as cleaners, security guards, and in facilities across the city, will receive hair cuts, hair styling and braiding, as well as shoulder, neck, and back massages.
“We are also collecting new or gently used women’s clothes, shoes, and handbags of all sizes, so that the women can each pick the items they want,” said Sutherland.
She explained that depending on the amount of donations we collect, each woman at the camp will receive a number of tickets to shop for items from the racks available.
Donations are open to all residents in the UAE until February 7, with 12 drop-off points across different communities.
Volunteers have listed their homes as drop-off and collection points in communities including Mirdif, Silicon Oasis, Jumeirah, The Springs, Arabian Ranches, and Downtown Dubai, among many more.
“Each volunteer is promoting the cause within their social networks — at their schools and community groups, and are looking through the donations and sorting them according to quality, condition and size,” said Sutherland.
Individuals can also clear out their closets to support the women at the labour accommodations by making their donations at the closest drop- off point.
