Dubai: Have you seen a gigantic light bulb in Dubai?
If you spot a “light bulb” structure anywhere in Dubai — all 15 of them — you stand a chance to win exciting prizes, including a volunteering opportunity abroad.
Dubai Cares and Dubai Culture on Monday announced the Dubai Cares Scavenger Hunt for 15 hidden light bulbs spread across the city to celebrate the life and legacy of Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding father. The competition will run from January 8 to 29.
The citywide scavenger hunt allows residents to explore the city in a different light — to look for light bulb structures that visualise the values instilled by Shaikh Zayed during the Year of Zayed 2018.
Each 1.4 metre-high light bulb is a visual masterpiece by volunteer artists from the UAE to execute their take on the 15 chosen values — tolerance, leadership, ambition, trust, resilience, peace, innovation, kindness, opportunity, happiness, gratitude, giving, courage, creativity, and commitment. Tariq Al Gurg, CEO of Dubai Cares, said this non-traditional mode of engaging society and donors is aimed at inspiring the spirit of volunteerism among everyone in a fun way and enlightening way.
“Shaikh Zayed instilled so many social values to Emiratis and non-Emiratis in the UAE. We selected 15 values and each is displayed in each bulb. They are spread across different heritage areas and places people rarely visit to encourage people to visit those places,” Al Gurg said.
“The artists who made the designs were the first volunteers for this programme. Members of the community will get a chance to participate as well by giving their time as they look for the structures. We’d like to have more engagement with society as this will encourage more volunteers from society,” he said, adding Dubai Cares currently has 30,000 registered volunteers.
Dubai Culture bore the cost of transforming the designs on paper into actual sculptures that are hard to miss in an open area. Saeed Al Naboudah, CEO of the Culture and Heritage Sector at Dubai Culture, said the initiative demonstrates the power of art to enhance social welfare and happiness. He said it is also serving the purpose of making Dubai as an open museum.
How to join
To take part in the hunt, participants must download the Dubai Cares Scavenger app to locate the structures. They will be able to access 15 different challenges and try to solve the question with three hints.
Every correct answer will lead them to the structure. They must scan the QR code on the base of the lamp and the first one to find all 15 structures will win. But the structures are not only there to provide entertainment, inspire volunteerism, and get residents to be in “detective mode”. They were also made to raise funds for Dubai Cares through donors.
Al Gurg said each structure will be given to entities who would like to acquire for a donation of Dh50,000 to Dubai Cares. The structure can be displayed in their offices as a symbol of their contribution to this philanthropic initiative.
Dubai Airports, Dubai Investments, Al Tayer Group, Scientechnic, Paris Gallery, and Dubai Mall have acquired the light bulbs and each sponsored light bulb will be handed over to the donor at the conclusion of the hunt.

Prizes to win
1st placer: A weeklong volunteering opportunity with Dubai Cares abroad (Volunteer Globally), one annual day pass for Dubai Parks and Resorts and a two-night stay for two at the Versace Hotel, and Sensasia spa voucher.
2nd placer: Volunteering opportunity in an edition of Volunteer Emirates 2018, one annual day pass for Dubai Parks and Resorts and a Dubai Mall voucher worth Dh3,000, and Sensasia spa voucher.
3rd placer: Volunteering opportunity in an edition of Volunteer Emirates 2018, one annual day pass for Dubai Parks and Resorts and a Dubai Mall voucher worth Dh2,000, and Sensasia spa voucher.
The first 50 residents to collect 10 points or solve 10 challenges will each receive Dh600 voucher from Paris Gallery.
