Sharjah: The sixth Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF) kicks off on Tuesday at Expo Centre Sharjah with the participation of 124 publishing houses from 17 countries.

The festival, which is being held under the theme “Discover Friends for Life”, is scheduled to run until April 25. The 11-day festival will feature 1,694 events to be presented by 175 guests, of whom 95 are writers, artists and academicians from the UAE and abroad. There will also be an increase in the number of activities and events taking place this year from 450 in 2013 to 1,694. Activities will include the ‘Cookery Corner’, in which a number of top international chefs will be participating, as well as the Kids Programme, which will feature a range of 875 fun activities for children.

A number of lectures on children’s rights along with theatrical performances, film screenings, reading sessions, and competitions will also take place throughout the festival.

The annual reading event will be held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. In light of the Sharjah Capital of Islamic Culture 2014 celebrations, an award-winning exhibition from the UK-based organisation, 1001 Inventions, will also be hosted. The interactive exhibition, which will run from Tuesday to May 15, will highlight a thousand years of scientific and cultural achievements during the Golden Age of the Muslim civilisation.
