Dubai: Several mosques across the city will be retrofitted with high-tech equipment to lower water consumption this Ramadan while a number of low-income households will receive new energy-efficient appliances, an official has said.

The move is part of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (Dewa) initiative to teach and show residents how to conserve resources such as water and electricity. Now in its second year, the initiative focuses on the theme: ‘This Ramadan, let your good deeds outweigh your consumption’.

Dewa will partner with the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities to replace faucets used for wudu (ablution) in several mosques with high-tech water reduction equipment.

Dewa will also work with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Beit Al Khair Society, and Etihad Energy Services Company to visit underprivileged families and replace their old appliances with newer and more efficient ones to reduce their energy and water costs.

“The launch of the second edition of this awareness campaign is in line with the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve sustainable development in the emirate,” Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa, said.

“We spare no effort in preserving our valuable natural resources and protecting our environment to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”

Khowla Al Muhairi, Vice-President, Marketing and Corporate Communication at Dewa, urged residents to use power and water wisely not just during Ramadan but for the rest of the year. This change needs to be part of residents’ lifestyles.
